San Miguel de Allende & Dolores Hidalgo

Leaving Queretaro we headed northwest to the State of Guanajuato and its World Heritage sights.

around el Jardin

After an hour we arrived in San Miguel de Allende and where guided through this lovely town.

Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel

We started at the  plaza principal El Jardin and the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel. This church was started in the late 17th century by the money of a rich family and later it was decorated with several towers giving it a wedding cake look.

Monastery La Conception

We walked the cobblestone streets to the former Monastery La Concepion housing today the School of Fine Arts. It is a very serene place and besides several murals, a fountain and a wonderful building, there were many workshops of different arts, e.g. weaving.

The streets around this area featured a lot of galleries, little shops with decorations and cosy restaurant.

little shops

At the Plaza Civica were another round of sights like the Oratorio di San Felipe Neri, Templo de la Salud and the Colegio de Salas.

Templo de la Salud

A late lunch we had at The Restaurant that was very tasty.

The Restaurant

With filled stomachs we continued our journey to Dolores Hidalgo to see the tomb of José Alfredo Jiménez - the biggest songwriter of "musica ranchera“.

tomb

To make tribute to him we had a Mariachi band with us playing some of his most famous songs and us singing along.

The name of the town includes the last name of the hero of the independence - priest Miguel Hidalgo who started the movement by summoning the people early for service and gave them the order to get rid of the Spaniards.

Mexican coat of arms: Eagle with a serpent on a cactus

Goodbye - see in the next town
