Farò - Algarve Coast, Portugal

Yesterday in the afternoon, I touched down at Farò airport at the Algarve coast. The next days, I will explore the coast and make my way up north to Lisbon and Porto.

My hostel (Blablabla) that I book via Airbnb is in the city of Farò, less than 5 min from the bus stop and less than 10 from the Marina and Old Town. So after getting my room and with that rid off my luggage I headed to the centre.

Arco Vila

On the Arco Vila (one of the three entrance archways to the Old Town) I saw several nests and then the first stork. Walking around the city I found a lot of them - having their nests in all the odd places: on churches, cupolas, water towers, street lamps and antennas. I am wondering about the birth rate here.

The Cathedral also called Sé stood on the main square surrounded by orange trees - there were also a lot of oranges hanging in the trees. Unfortunately, I was too small to reach up. But given all the orange trees, fresh orange juice comes at a very low rate.

The original cathedral dates back to 1251 and was probably built on top of a Roman temple. During the Moorish period is also served as mosque. Most of today's structure was constructed after 1755 and is a mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

If you come at the right time, you can visit the cathedral, the little museum, the courtyard and the bell tower. Due to the Easter holidays, I had to come back twice before entering.

Eastern also means that there was a procession for which several figures, a coffin and flags where carried through the streets.

 Waiting for the procession

Not only the clergy took an active role in the procession, but also politicians, firefighters, boy and girl scouts, choirs and the Algarve Bike Club.

Walking the streets of Farò I saw a lot of beautiful old buildings, some well maintained, others awfully neglected.

Another noteworthy church is Our Lady of Carmo that was paid for by Brazilian gold and features baroque style.

On the backside of the church is the bone chapel - a very macabre vista: the bones and skulls of 1000 monks served as building material - starting the age of recycling.

Capela dos Ossos

On the coastline is a national park called Ria Formosa which is a spectacular place for fishing, diving and bird watching. I went on a guided tour to Desert Island and Lighthouse Island. Unfortunately, the yearly cleaning had not yet taken place and a lot of liter was lying around.

If you wanna come back to civilization after the nature trip, you can go to the shopping centre Forum Algarve that also has a cinema.

To finish the day it's best to have your dinner in the centre - fish is always fresh and all the restaurants offer it.

At the marina, I had a splendid view of the sunset and the rise of the moon.

Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Today we went to Saalbach-Hinterglemm for skiing. Parking the car at the Schattberg Express, we took the same to the top.

Morning Update: -8°C

Victor and me just tried out the black slope returning to the start while Inka took 2b to Jausern where we joined her.

Victor

Inka

We took the ski bus back to the Schattberg Express and headed west to the valley of Hinterglemm - Inka on the slope, Victor and me on the ski route and a bit off.

Having fun

We had our lunch at the Westgipfelhütte - great food & view.

My lunch - Skiers' salad

and dessert

Another down and up brought us on the Zwölferkogel and an icy black 14. A short switch to the south side taught us that the snow there was very soft and nearly water, so we returned to the north. There were still some good afternoon slopes at the Seekar.

At the last chair lift, we met Inka again, took a picture on the top and headed down for the last time there.

Riders' Top Picks:

  • Chris: 1 North Downhill (black)
  • Inka: 11 Family Downhill (blue)
  • Victor: 14 Zwölferkogel North Downhill (black) - his fans might still be up on the last escarpment and say WOW

Glacier skiing in Kaprun

On Monday, we headed south to Kaprun. Before the glacier skiing area, there is a smaller mountain with two chair lifts and a ski lift. We had the car parked in the valley and after a warm up round on the Maiskogel we hopped on the ski bus and headed up to the Glacier Jet.

 Maiskogel

A lot of people were on the slopes - nonetheless the parking lot was not yet half full.

We started with one of the ski routes - X4 (Jumpy) that led down in a creek to the top of the first Glacier Jet.

Then we took several chair & ski lifts to reach the highest point of the skiing area just below the Kitzsteinhorn, where we met Inka for lunch. The seating area was very small and we had to sit on bar stools while eating.

The last 100 m to lunch

After lunch we explored the mountain and took pictures of the panorama - even tough the sun was not really cutting through the clouds. There was a tunnel leading to a view point explaining the exploration of the mountain for gold, silver and crystals.

We tried another ski route X2 (West side Story) and liked it much better than the first.

 Cliff Jumper?

All in all, Kaprun is a nice skiing area if there is no more snow in the valley.

Riders' Top Picks:

  • Chris: 5b (black)
  • Inka: did not like the area
  • Victor: X2 (West side Story)

The King's Tour

Just 10 min from our flat was another skiing area that we tried out today: Hochkönig (high king) with the villages of Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach.

All the villages are connected by the King's tour - a combination of lifts and slopes.

Morning Panorama

Rising early from bed really paid well: empty tracks, fantastic snow, lots of fun.

After short black detour, we started on the King's Tour. Due to the warm weather and sun, the snow got bad very soon in some valleys.

King's Throne on Aberg

The tour was nice but also meant a lot of plain narrow forest tracks. Sometimes we also had to go up a little bit. No problem for skiers, but snowboarders had to walk. Victor and me took off several times to try out some black runs in between.

For lunch, we met at the Karbachalm in Dienten where we had the dish of the day roast pork.

After lunch we headed back to Maria Alm and finished the day with one of the ski routes - bringing us to ungroomed territory.

  • Inka: Dienten #14 (red)
  • Victor: Maria Alm #16 (black)

Back in the game - Almenwelt Lofer

Saturday early morning, we started from Dachau heading south to the Alps. Arriving just in time for the cabin lift to start. We (Chris, Inka & Victor) got ourselves a 9-days Salzburger Superski Pass - giving us access to 22 small, medium and really big skiing resorts.

First ride up

Victor and me got tempted by the empty slopes and instead of changing to the second cabin lift, ...

... we took a ski lift to one of the black downhill slopes.

We headed down to the valley feeling like on a racetrack with nobody interfering our lines.

Before lunch we headed to the backcountry area and had some real fun making our own runs in the deep snow.

For lunch, we met with Inka at Haus Schönblick.

The sun was shining all day, so the snow got soft and more difficult to handle, so before the final downhill trip we stopped for something to drink at the Kechtalm from where we had a fantastic view.

Riders' Top Picks:
  • Chris: Backcountry off Grubhörndl
  • Inka: Fairytale forest (blue)
  • Victor: Hochwena (black)

Statistics of Day#1

Afterwards, we drove to Saalfelden am steinermen Meer (stony ocean) where we had booked a nice apartment.
