Around Évora in the Alentejo region, there are several sites of megalith stones - it's the region with the most menhirs in Portugal.
I followed a dirt road between pasture, olive and cork trees to the first parking lot. From there a narrow trail fenced off on both sides from the nature led to a sole standing megalith.
Menhir dos Almendres
Down the road is the more spectacular site of an oval of 95 standing stones - some having carvings. They have been put up in different areas, probably at astronomic constellations, and might have served as social gathering places or for sacred rituals.
Cromeleque dos Almendres
Driving around you will find several more of these sites in the middle of nowhere.
